The methotrexate shortage reared its ugly head. Although it was reported that sufficient quantities of the drug were being imported, there was actual rationing where many people were told to use an alternative. Sue was one of those people, but fortunately, the change of drug led to a week delay by which time the drug was no longer being rationed. It may be that the alternative would have been just as effective and even not had more side effects, it still creates anxiety. Sue had her chemo treatment on Friday and recovered over the weekend.
I wish I knew how the US can avoid avoidable shortages. There is no good excuse for this to have happened and unfortunately, this is not the first completely avoidable drug shortage. There is legislation that may help, but there should be some way to stop this from happening here in the US. The articles I linked to have some of the explanations for how we got to this point. I hope we can find the will to keep this from happening again.
Sue is feeling better and will be back at work tomorrow.
